National Truck Driver Appreciation Week

As we gear up for National Truck Driver Appreciation Week from September 15-21, 2024, we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible individuals who keep our world moving—our dedicated truck drivers. Truck drivers are the unsung heroes of our economy, playing a crucial role in transporting goods across the country, ensuring that our shelves are stocked, our businesses are supplied, and our communities are connected. Your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed, and this week is our chance to show our gratitude.

Facts You May Not Know About Truck Drivers

Here are some recent facts about truck drivers and the trucking industry that highlight their significant impact on our economy and daily life:

  • Duty Periods and Breaks: Truck drivers can have a duty period lasting up to 14 hours, known as the 14-hour rule. During this time, they are allowed to drive for up to 11 hours. After driving for 8 hours, they are required to take a 30-minute break. Many of these trips span several days, which means drivers spend extended periods away from home, family, and friends.

  • Number of Truck Drivers: As of 2024, there are approximately 3.6 million truck drivers in the United States. This number has seen a modest increase from previous years. Interestingly, women now make up 7.2 percent of all truck drivers, up from 6.2 percent in 2017.

  • Annual Mileage: Truck drivers collectively log around 445 billion miles annually. This number reflects the immense distance traveled to ensure goods are delivered efficiently across the country.

  • Long Haul Miles: On average, long-haul drivers cover approximately 105,000 miles per year. This high mileage is indicative of the extensive journeys required to transport goods across the nation.

  • Dependence on Trucking: Over 80% of U.S. communities rely solely on trucking for the delivery of their goods. This statistic underscores the essential role that trucking plays in ensuring that products reach their destinations.

Thank You, Drivers!

From everyone at Vander Haag's, a heartfelt THANK YOU to the 3.6 million men and women who deliver our medical supplies, the food we eat, and the materials that build our homes and communities.
